Your Credit Card Travel Insurance Might Refund You For Cancelled Plans Due To The Coronavirus
If you’ve planned trips this year and are now scared of traveling because of coronavirus, you may be able to get your money back.
There are currently over 100 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States and over 98,000 worldwide, according to data from John Hopkins University. The spike in cases worldwide has deterred many Americans from traveling and canceling trips they’ve had planned for months.
If you booked your trip using a credit card with trip cancellation and interruption insurance, all may not be lost. According to research by CNBC Select, getting your money back depends on whether you choose to cancel your trip if you have no control over the situation and are forced to cancel.
Most of the time, coverage will include tours, passenger fares, and tours but only if the amount was purchased in full with the eligible travel credit card.
Your travel credit card will cover a canceled trip if you meet these requirements (according to CNBC Select):
- Terrorist attack or hijacking
- Severe weather that prevents travel
- Accidental bodily injury, loss of life or sickness experienced by you, a traveling companion or an immediate family member
You have to be sick before canceling in order to be fully covered. Canceling because you want to avoid getting the coronavirus means you are choosing to cancel which can result in you not receiving coverage.
However, if you have a doctor’s note stating that you cannot travel because you may be sick, your card will most likely cover the cancellation. Another way to receive coverage is if the governor or mayor of your state announces travel restrictions.
According to the Sapphire Reserve card’s policy, “quarantine of you or your travel companion imposed by a physician or by a competent governmental authority having jurisdiction, due to health reasons,” is covered.
If you’re not covered by credit card travel insurance, you may still be able to get your money back from the airline you booked with. Airlines know the severity of the coronavirus and are working to provide reimbursements or travel credits to travelers. You can also try contacting hotels to be reimbursed as well.
