The unpredictable nature of travel has a way of bringing out our best and worst qualities, making it an ideal for couples who want to see whether their love can go the distance or friends who want to deepen their bonds.

If you’re voyaging with your travel buddies for the first time, here are some tips to make sure your friendship survives the trip:

1. Pick your travel companion wisely

The first step is to make sure that you choose the right friend to accompany you on vacation. How well do you know this person and what makes you think they’d be a good travel partner? If it’s someone you only see under certain circumstances, like a co-worker or distant cousin, ask questions to get familiar with their travel style.

A few things to consider would be whether the person is well-traveled and what kind of destinations they gravitate to. Are you both obsessed with beaches and nature? Or are you more of a history and culture lover, while your friend prefers adventure travel? How would you bridge these interests to meet in the middle? Consider how compatible your daily habits (are you both morning people?) and dietary preferences (do either of you have food restrictions that will impact travel and how accommodating are you willing to be?) are. It may seem like a lot to think about, but it will help you avoid conflict and frustration later on.

2. Agree on budgets beforehand

There are few things more frustrating than being on vacation with someone who is pinching pennies when you’re in the mood to splurge. There’s nothing wrong with either of these travel styles, but it will be a challenge to find activities that you both can enjoy if you’re on vastly different budgets. Have a conversation beforehand about how much you’re willing to spend on accommodations, food, and activities to make sure you’re on the same page.

3. Be flexible and willing to compromise

It’s inevitable that your preferences will differ from your travel partner in some ways so be willing to compromise a little. If your friend agrees to join you for a museum date even though it’s not their first choice activity, show your appreciation by returning the favor and letting them choose an activity the following day.

4. Limit time on social media

One way to strengthen your friendship while traveling is to be as present as possible, which means taking a break from sharing everything with your Instagram followers. You might even leave your phones at your rental so that you can give each other (and your adventures) your full attention. It will also make it easier to communicate through difficult moments, rather than turning to your phone when you’re annoyed.

5. Schedule alone time

Too much togetherness can create tension in even the strongest of relationships. Schedule time apart to do whatever your heart pleases. If you or your travel buddy is not comfortable venturing alone, you can use that time to take a nap, journal, read, or order room service.
