Solo travel can help you step outside of your comfort zone and wholeheartedly experience a destination more than you would if you were with someone.

It’s also great because you’ll get to explore a new city on your own terms.

If you’re skeptical about solo travel, these tips will ease you into your first solo trip:

Book Solo-Friendly Accommodations

There are many hotels, Air BnBs and hostels that cater to solo travelers.

Booking a room that makes you feel safe and comfortable is the first step towards a successful solo vacation.

Pack Lightly

Nothing is worse than having to pull your heavy luggage through the airport.

Pack lightly by wearing layers on your flight to lighten your load. Also wear your heaviest shoes an jacket on the flight to lower the weight of your luggage.

Be Patient

Immersing yourself in a new city and environment can be intimidating at first.

Take the first day of your trip to take a breath, relax, take in your surroundings and then settle into your plans as a solo traveler.

Taking your time and exploring at your own pace is totally fine.

Stay Safe

It’s especially important to stay safe when traveling alone.

Always be aware of your surroundings — don’t walk around with flashy jewelry or a lot of cash.

Make sure to be discreet when walking around with electronics such as your phone, laptop or camera

Ask For Help

Studying maps and getting to know landmarks in your destination city is important, but it is normal to get lost.

Don’t be afraid to ask locals for help — just smile, be friendly and ask.

Most people are happy to help and you won’t end up sticking out as a lost and confused tourist, which can attract scammers.

Learn The Local Language

Of course you won’t know the entire language but knowing the basics like greetings and ‘thank you’ can go a long way.

Locals will be more responsive and friendly if they see you are making an effort to learn their language.

Be Social

Just because you’re traveling alone doesn’t mean you have to be alone during your entire trip.

Traveling solo could be the perfect opportunity to meet new people who you wouldn’t normally meet if you were traveling with someone.

You can meet new people at coffee shops, hostels, bars, bookstores or take a day tour with other solo travelers!

Connect With Staff

Traveling solo definitely has it’s perks.

Get to know the staff at your hotel and they will begin looking out for you . They may even give you suggestions of places to go, things to do and make more of an effort to make your stay enjoyable.

Get Comfortable With Yourself

Believe it or not, but a lot of people have trouble with being alone.

If you’re one of those people, then get use to alone time because solo traveling requires you to spend time with yourself.

Embrace going to a restaurant and having dinner with yourself while people-watching.
