Airline travel is a multi-trillion dollar business with a reported 8 million people flying every day. When you think of the busiest airline routes, travel between the United States and the Caribbean islands may come to mind. However, you may be surprised to hear that, at just 185 miles in length, flights between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore actually top the list. With an impressive 41 flights taking that route a day, and more than 30,000 flights between March 2018 and February 2019, it is certainly the busiest flight route in the world.

Most of the flight routes on the top 10 list are between Asian cities, with the only North American destinations coming in seventh between New York’s LaGuardia and Toronto’s Pearson International. According to msn.com, the only other non-Asian route is a flight between Dubai International and Kuwait International.

To give you a sense of the popularity of these flights, OAG Aviation Worldwide, a data analysis and research firm, reports that the average number of seats on Asian international routes is 231 passengers. That’s well ahead of most international Latin American flights at 171 passengers and 165 seats in Europe, 131 in the Middle East and Africa, and 111 in North America.

However, when it comes to the long-haul, the United States takes the cake with 8 of the 10 busiest long-haul routes operating inside the United States. With more than 15,000 flights annually, the busiest are flights between New York’s JFK and San Francisco, with JFK to London’s Heathrow coming in second.

And the winner for the short-haul? The busiest short-haul flight in the world operates between South Korea’s Jeju International and Gimpo International.
