It was an amazing Saturday afternoon in New York City. Streets were closed off for block parties, Harlem was having its festival weekend, and Times Square is back like it never left. I decided to hit the East Village with my teen son and grab a bite. I heard a lot about Lamia’s for quite some time but I’m usually a chicken & waffles man for brunch. On this day, it was time to switch it up. Finally, I found a place to get a taste of real Mediterranean food.

Immediately upon entering the restaurant you’re transported to another place. The different blues of the ocean, the brass decor against the walls, and the shine from the tiles. They purposely wanted you to feel like you were at a dock or on the bottom of the inside of a huge ship. It also felt very familiar with lots of good energy. Just reminded me of my travels to Greece or the South of France. There was a birthday party a couple sections away and it wasn’t even annoying. The joy and excitement that reservation had just bounced along the walls and made the restaurant electric.

I ordered the shakshuka, which had calamari, octopus, and shrimp stewed in a red sauce served along with toasted slices of fresh garlic bread. My first time having this dish and I must say I would definitely have it again. The flavors were subtle but made a strong statement for the seasonings they use. Similar to french cuisine, but more like its athletic cousin. And my son chose to “play it safe” with the fish sandwich, but the fish sandwich was an experience in itself. Different textures and citrusy flavors on every bite, with a side of some well- fried wedges. My son and I definitely enjoyed brunch at Lamia’s Fish Market. I also recommend trying something you’ve never had before when you get there. You don’t want to miss out on your next favorite dish.
