Sailing offers a great way to explore the majesty of the sea. Whether you’re on a yacht, a cruise ship or a speedboat, there’s something invigorating about the salty air and the rush of the water. For some, sailing is a hobby. Others view it as a lifetime commitment. They spent copious amounts of time refining their skills, so they can participate in the world’s most prestigious regattas.

Here are some islands offering opportunities to sail.

Antigua and Barbuda

This dual island nation has been a haven for sailors for years.

Antigua Sailing Week draws sailors from around the world, and it’s a treat to see them compete for the top prize. This year’s event took place April 29 to May 5, and it happens again over similar dates in 2024.

The Solomon Islands

This stunning archipelago in the South Pacific consists of over 900 islands. The major ones are San Cristobal, Choiseul, Malaita, New Georgia, Santa Isabel and Guadalcanal. Whether you charter a yacht for a large group or just a few people, you’ll be awed by the diverse marine life and staggering beauty all around you.

The Whitsunday Islands, Australia

These islands are off the coast of Queensland, and they are a must-see.

Some of the best times to charter are April to June, when the heat and humidity aren’t so bad. If you want to catch Airlie Beach Race Week or Hamilton Island Race Week, go in July or August. You might catch a glimpse of a humpback whale.

The peak sailing period is September and October. Usually, there’s plenty of sunshine and the skies are clear, which are perfect conditions for sailing.

The Croatian Islands

Mainland Croatia is beautiful, but don’t sleep on its many islands.

Sail to isles of Korčula, Hvar or Brač. While you’re exploring the electric blues of the Adriatic Sea, be sure to sample some of Croatia’s incredible seafood.

St. Barts

Sailors and tourists in general love the turquoise waters of this French island.

If you want to learn how to sail, there are a number of schools that teach the fundamentals. Once you have a firm grasp on the basics, Gustavia Harbor, Colombier Bay and Grand Cul de Sac offer great sailing routes. As you advance in your sailing journey, you can take on journeys to other islands, like St. Martin and Anguilla.

St. Barts hosts the Bucket Regatta, featuring some of the most impressive maxi yachts you’ll ever see.
