A Delta Airlines pilot was forced to make an emergency landing at New York’s LaGuardia Airport after a passenger tried to yank open the plane’s door mid-flight.

An audio recording obtained by NBC New York revealed that the pilot alerted air traffic control that a passenger tried to open the “forward service door” on the right side of Delta Flight 5935 from Raleigh, North Carolina to LaGuardia.

“We’ll need crash fire rescue,” the pilot first told air traffic control authorities. He canceled the crash fire rescue request stating, “We just had a mentally disturbed passenger tried to open the forward door. Everything is under control now. We’re going to be taxiing to the gate.”

The passenger described as a 20-year-old-female stated that she wanted to commit suicide while the plane was making its final descent to La Guardia.

Passengers on the flight were able to stop her from grabbing the door, as reported in the NY Post.

The flight landed safely around 1:35 pm local time and no injuries were reported.

One passenger, Stacy Herbert, tweeted about the incident.

“A young woman in perhaps her early twenties became suicidal and tried to open the door of plane as we descended into LGA,” Herbert stated. “Her father pulled her from the door. She was screaming her head off that she needed to open the door and die.”

Herbert continued, “I wasn’t scared as I knew the door could not be opened but her shrieks were terrifying. And she was sitting behind us so when she was pulled back to her seat it was awful to see her suicidal distress.”

As for the passenger, she was taken into Lenox Hill Hospital for evaluation.
