It may be small in size, but that’s no reason to sleep on St. Kitts and Nevis for your next vacation. At just 104 square miles and a population of around 45,000, this dual-island nation is the smallest country in the Caribbean. Known for its stunning beaches, tropical forests, and friendly locals, St. Kitts and Nevis should absolutely take a spot on your travel bucket list. Here are a few more reasons why you should visit:

Perfect Climate

In the capital city, Basseterre, temperatures fluctuate between 77 degrees and about 82 degrees throughout the entire year. Waters rarely drop below 78 degrees. Due to these near perfect temperates, swimming is a year-round option.

Diversity of Beaches

From golden-brown sand found on the Southeast Peninsula, to volcanic grey and black sand beaches found along the northern and south-western coasts, each beach offers a little something different. The rest of the coastline offers picturesque views of cliffs that drop into the sea and large boulders and rocks lining the crystal waters.

Carnival

Carnival in the Caribbean should certainly be on our travel bucket list, and St. Kitts-Nevis National Carnival – also known as Sugar Mas, is a great one to experience. Taking place around Christmas and the New Year, Carnival is a vibrant spectacle full of color, costumes, dancing, and the continuous beat of soca and calypso music

Music Festival

The second largest event of the year is the St. Kitts Music Festival held at the end of June. A tradition of over 20 years, the festival attracts international artists to share their music with cheerful crowds for the three-day celebration.

Sugar Cane History

St. Kitts is commonly referred to as “Sugar City” due to its history of cultivating sugar cane starting in 1643. The St. Kitts Scenic Railway was originally built to transport sugar cane across the island beginning in 1912. Now, the railway offers a three-hour tour around the island giving passengers the opportunity to take in the incredible scenery and culture of the country.
