Get The News

In East Austin, pick up a copy of The Villager. Its one of the first African American newspapers in the south. And guess what? It’s FREE!


George Washington Carver Museum

Let’s get some history in while in Austin. Experience the Carver Museum and view the Juneteenth exhibit and other cultural materials and galleries of African American history.  They also host plays and advance screenings of movies. It also has a genealogy center.


Patillo’s BBQ

Texas ain’t Texas without BBQ. Patillo’s in Austin is one of the oldest BBQ joints in Texas. Founded in 1912, Patillo’s is the fourth oldest barbecue business in Texas known for its unique seasonings and creole-cajun spices.

Downs-Mabson Fields

Head to the Downs-Mabson Fields. It was home to the Austin Black Senators, a team in the Negro League. It recently received some upgrades with a mosaic mural, as a tribute to the past players.


Country Boyz Fixins.

Get your soul food fixin’ at Country Boyz Fixins. Get gumbo, oxtails, chicken and dumplings, po-boy sandwiches, catfish, fried okra, and all the southern sides you’d expect in East Austin. This family-owned business also offers a variety of daily lunch specials made from scratch.


Diverse Arts Gallery

This non-profit facility showcases a variety of cultural, artistic and education programs, events and exhibits, preserving the African American culture of Austin. The gallery exhibits are changed on a monthly, sometimes weekly basis. If you’re into jazz music, they host weekly Blue night.
