If you’re visiting Thailand this summer, you’ll have to scrap plans to visit the beautiful beach called Maya Bay.
Between June and September, Maya Bay on the island of Koh Phi Phi Leh in Thailand will be closing to the public as local officials work to repair environmental damage according to the Guardian.
Maya Bay, which rose in popularity after the 2000 film The Beach, welcomes thousands of visitors per day who access the beach via boats from Phuket or Koh Phi Phi. Over the years, plastic waste, construction and boat anchors have all caused 80% of the coral reefs in the area to be destroyed.

The summer months are a low season for visitors to Maya Bay, which is why the season was chosen for the restoration. Though many would prefer that the beach be closed to the public permanently, hopefully, the break can help officials restore the beach to its natural glory.
