We have officially reached the times where we begin seeing things that are straight out of The Jetsons. Welcome to the future of travel.

Hermeus, a start-up aerospace company, recently secured funding to begin developing and creating an aircraft that can fly across the world five times faster than the speed of sound. Yes, planes that will have the ability to fly at over 3,000 miles per hour.

The goal is to create a commercial aircraft that will fly us from New York to Paris and London in only 90 minutes. Keep in mind, this is typically a 7-9 hour direct flight. The team plans to use technology and materials that are already available on the market.

The aircraft will be able to hold up to 20 passengers and would mostly be marketed to business class travelers or those that usually travel by private jet. You can guarantee this service will come at a high price.

As of now, the company is aiming to roll out the first versions within the next 8 to 10 years. They hope to be able to start showing demos as early as five years from now.

The majority of funding was received from venture capital firm, Khosla Ventures, although the exact amount has not been publicly disclosed.

“Hermeus is developing an aircraft that not only improves the aviation experience with very reduced flight times but also has the potential to have a great societal and economic impact,” said Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures.

“We’ve set out on a journey to revolutionize the global transportation infrastructure, bringing it from the equivalent of dial-up into the broadband era, by radically increasing the speed of travel over long distances.” said co-founder and CEO AJ Piplica. “We’re excited to work with Khosla Ventures to turn this vision into reality.”
