Puerto Rican rap star Kevin Fret was murdered in Puerto Rico early Thursday morning.

Reports say the 24-year-old rapper was riding his motorcycle near the intersection of Eduardo Conde and Bellview in Santurce when he was suddenly shot eight times. He was later taken to the Centro Médico in Río Piedras where he was pronounced dead.

Known as the first openly gay Latin trap artist, Fret made headlines and gained a vast following after embracing his sexuality in an industry that generally disrespects the LGBTQ community. Because of this, Fret was prone to attacks. A random bystander attacked Fret in Miami after the two had an argument. The rapper alleged that he was targeted because of his sexuality. The assailant was later arrested on aggravated battery charges.

Eduardo Rodriguez, Fret’s manager, released a statement to the press yesterday. “Kevin was an artistic soul, a dreamer with a big heart. His passion was music, and he still had a lot left to do. This violence should stop,” the statement read in Spanish. “There are no words to describe our emotions and the pain that it causes us to know that a person with so many dreams has to go. We should all unite in these difficult times, and ask for lots of peace for our beloved Puerto Rico.”

For now, Fret’s murder hasn’t been labeled a hate crime, and officials are investigating to see if there was another motive. Puerto Rico is known for being one of the most LGBTQ-friendly communities in the entire Caribbean region. Civil rights laws ban discrimination for employment, public transportation, housing, and other spaces but research shows that 82 percent of residents still feel discriminated against.
