Michael Cohen, Pres. Donald Trump’s former lawyer and confidante, made not-so-shocking accusations against his former client in hours-long testimony in front of  U.S. Congress on Wednesday.

Cohen, who was sentenced to three years in prison in December 2018 for “financial crimes and lying to congress,” gave a full statement to Congress and then fielded questions. In his opening statement, he asserted that Trump is “a racist,” “a conman,” and “a cheat.” Of note were Cohen’s claims that Trump courts white supremacists, and even questioned the abilities of former President Barack Obama based on his race.

The entire world looked on in disbelief in January 2018 when news leaked of Trump referring to countries like Haiti and African nations as “sh*thole countries.” But with Cohen’s new testimony, it’s clear that the U.S. under Barack Obama’s leadership was included in his statement. Cohen alleges that Trump implied that any country led by a black person was a “sh*thole.”

“Mr. Trump is a racist. The country has seen Mr. Trump court white supremacists and bigots. You have heard him call poorer countries “shitholes.”

In private, he is even worse. He once asked me if I could name a country run by a black person that wasn’t a -‘shithole.’ This was when Barack Obama was President of the United States.

While we were once driving through a struggling neighborhood in Chicago, he commented that only black people could live that way. And, he told me that black people would never vote for him because they were too stupid.” — Michael Cohen, in testimony with U.S. Congress (full statement here)

This isn’t the first time he’s alleged these things. In November 2018 Cohen made similar statements about Trump in an interview with Vanity Fair.

The blowback from Trump’s alleged comments has been swift and plentiful.
