As Issa Rae so eloquently told us, “I’m rooting for everybody Black,” and as 2020 continues to unfold we’re seeing more and more Black-owned businesses level up.

Detroit-based Jamaican sweet tea brand Ellis Island Tea is one of the latest Black businesses to take things to the next level. Not only will the brand make its Walmart debut this month, but it has also garnered the support of comedian Kevin Hart as an investor.

“There were a lot of people pulling for Nailah,” Kevin Hart said in a statement. “Her name just kept coming up and coming across my radar. So, I figured there had to be something to it.”

Ellis Island got its start right in Detroit native Nailah Ellis’ kitchen. The recipes are inspired by Ellis’ Jamaican great-grandfather, who immigrated to the U.S. through Ellis Island over 100 years ago.

After starting from literally nothing while selling the drinks from the trunk of her car, Ellis Island Tea is now said to be the largest Black woman beverage manufacturer in the United States with Ellis owning her own beverage production facility in Detroit.

She employs Detroit residents in her facility and plans to pass the company down to her two young daughters one day.

“We all need opportunity,” Ellis said in a statement. “I’ve been given mine and now I’m paying it forward and providing that for others.”
