Nearly 5,000 planes take to the sky a day. With the way things are going these days though, how safe are they? Can we trust our favorite airlines?

It turns out we can, especially if its Qantas Airlines. They have recently been named the world’s safest airline in 2019. It’s no shocker though since they’ve held top rankings since 2014. The Australian airline has a reputation of being clean, safe and operational exceptional for years. “It is extraordinary that Qantas has been the lead airline in virtually every major operational safety advancement over the past 60 years and has not had a fatality in the jet era,” AirlineRatings.com editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas said. “But Qantas is not alone.”

Some of our favorites rounded out the top 20 ranking. Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airways, American Airlines, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates, EVA Air, Finnair, and Hawaiian are just a few that received top honors. Following them were KLM, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Scandinavian Airline System, Singapore Airlines, Swiss and Virgin Group. One shocker on the list was United Airlines, who was dropped from the AirlineRatings.com list last year. Thomas praised Hawaiian and Finnair for their perfectionist ways. “Long established airlines such as Hawaiian and Finnair have perfect records in the jet era,” Thomas said.

So how did AirlineRatings.com come up with this list? The travel website used different data points to put the list together. It considers government audits, crash and serious incident records and profitability played a big part in everything. The site looked at data from over 400 airlines.

The website also identified airlines that are safe but won’t burn a hole in our wallets. The top 10 airlines who made that list are some less popular ones like Flybe, HK Express, Jetstar Australia / Asia, Thomas Cook, Volaris, Vueling, Westjet, and Wizz. Jetblue and Frontier Airlines also made the list.
