Are you craving a beach getaway or a weekend near the water? With millions of people flocking to the beach during summer breaks around the world, it’s easy to see that there is a real draw for people to be near the ocean and there may be a scientific reason as to why. Being on or near the water doesn’t just feel good, experts believe that it helps improve our mind and overall sense of well-being.

Marine Biologist and best-selling book author Wallace J. Nichols certainly agrees, saying that the brain state is called “Blue Mind,” and it helps offset the “Red Mind” caused by daily stresses. When we hear, feel, and see water, we can be overcome with a sense of calm as our cortisol levels go down.

The numbers don’t lie either. According to a survey conducted by Wakefield Research and Discover Boating, four in five Americans report that being on the water relaxes them. When you add in the numerous health benefits of the vitamin D that your body absorbs from the sun including healthier bones and a stronger immune system, the beach really is a haven for health.
