One thing that travelers love about Madrid is its affordability compared to other European cities, which makes it the perfect destination for budget travelers.

Even though it’s the capital of Spain, it operates like a smaller city. The best way to get around is by foot so that means more money in your pockets during your stay.

At the top of your itinerary should be a visit to Puerto del Sol. Known as the “Gate of the Sun,” it is one of the most famous attractions in Madrid and the center point of Spain.

With its semi-circular shape, it is a junction for many of the city’s historical and busiest streets such as Mayor, Arenal, Alcalá and Preciados, as well as the starting point for all major radial roads in Spain, according to Es Madrid.

Here you will find the old Post Office building, the famous Tio Pepe sign, and the Kilometre Zero plaque on the floor to see.

Next, head to the Temple of Debod.Located in Calle Ferraz, this is an Egyptian temple dating back to the 2nd century BC, that was transported to Madrid’s Cuartel de la Montaña Park.

The temple was donated to Spain by the Egyptian government to save it from floods following the construction of the great Aswan Dam.

Inside of the monuments are closed to the public, but visitors can stroll along the walkway during the temple opening hours from 10 a.m. through 8 p.m. everyday except Monday.

You can’t leave Spain without having a tapas restaurant experience.

Tapas, which literally translates to “small plates,” is on a whole different level in Madrid.

With so many choices in the city, we recommend a tapas food tour, so you can enjoy a variety of cuisine options, including thick Spanish hot chocolate, Spanish omelette, and Madrid’s famous stew.

Right now, there are round-trip flights to Madrid from the U.S. for as low as $235. Here’s how to book:

From New York

If you’ve been saving up that vacation, then you don’t want to miss the chance to go to Madrid from New York for $234 round-trip. This direct flight can be purchased on Skyscanner from Aug. 5 through Sept. 5.

From Boston

Skyscanner has round-trip flights from Boston on Swiss Airlines for $262. The only downside to this flight option is the long layover in Zurich from Aug. 6 through Aug. 26. On the bright side, you get two destinations for the price of one-trip.

From Miami

Towards the end of August, Iberia Airlines has a direct flight from Miami for $327 round-trip. Book on Skyscanner, and use Aug. 16 through Aug. 31 as your travel dates.
