It has been confirmed by the CDC that the new coronavirus that first appeared in Wuhan, China last month, killing six and sickening hundreds, has had its first case in the United States.

The unnamed patient reportedly arrived at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on January 15, prior to the crackdown of screenings on passengers arriving from Wuhan, China. On January 19, he sought care and was diagnosed with the deadly virus. He is currently in isolation at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington as the CDC and Washington state trace everyone he has come in contact with.

Passengers landing in New York’s JFK,  San Francisco (SFO), and Los Angeles (LAX) airports are already being screened for the virus upon arrival. Screenings will take place at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport beginning this week. Passengers flying from Wuhan will only be able to fly into one of these 5 airports.

The Wuhan virus is in the same family as SARS, a virus that killed over 700 people between 2002 and 2003. The outbreak began late December in an animal market.

Travelers are advised to “practice enhanced precautions.”
