Three lucky people in Chicago will win $5,000 for coming up with the best idea for winter dining in the city.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced the Winter Dining Challenge on Twitter, highlighting that “Chicago winters have a reputation.”

On average,  Chicago receives an average snowfall of 36 inches.  And while that’s relatively low compared to Upstate New York and some places in Pennsylvania, it’s the Windy City’s location along Lake Michigan that makes it feel much colder.

The winter dining contest was created with the help of IDEO, a California-based design company, BMO Harris Bank, and the Illinois Restaurant Association.

Each entry must include research, a prototype, details on feasibility, and details with how it could address the city’s needs.

Winners will be selected in three categories: outdoor, standalone structures; indoor-adjacent spaces; and cultural shifts making winter dining more appealing.

The contest is currently in the Evaluation Phase where a jury is deliberating the top entries in each category.

And while we’ll have to wait until Sept. 29 for the winners to be announced, here’s what residents submitted on Twitter.
