Last Lap Cornerstore is the newest running shop in Chicago and it just so happens to be the first Black-owned running store on the city’s South Side.

Entrepreneurship was never the goal for Ian Gonzalez until he realized that he needed to fill a community need.

“I couldn’t find a running store on the South Side. I had to go Downtown to Dick’s Sporting Goods to get stuff, but the level of customer service was … they couldn’t advise you on things like nutrition or gear,” he said.

But that changes in Last Lap Cornerstore.

Gonzalez is bringing both passion and knowledge into his store dedicated to runners.

He’s currently selling gear, nutritional bars and supplements, and other equipment, including running shoes.

“This journey has been a journey of affirmation for me,” Gonzalez added. “The things that I didn’t know about myself growing up, the things that I lost through different failures in life — like that childlike confidence you had kinda gets chipped away. Doing this is filling up my cup. It’s telling me that I can talk through ideas, figure things out.”

You can pull up to the corner store on Tuesdays from 11 am to 5 pm; Wednesday through Friday from 11 am to 7 pm; Saturdays from 9:30 am to 6 pm; and Sundays from 12 pm to 5 pm.
