There’s a new wrapping paper on the market that was designed to represent Black culture.

Founded by Tamecca S., FOLKUS was created as “an evolving, abstract love letter and platform to Black folks and Blackness.”

“Through our products, FOLKUS seeks to offer both utility and a platform for art, storytelling, history, dynamism, activism, and the preservation of BLACK beauty, joy, and triumph,” she told Travel Noire in an interview.

In an interview with Travel Noire, Tamecca further explains her inspiration behind the brand:

Travel Noire: What inspired you to start FOLKUS?

Tamecca S.: Design products such as wrapping paper, décor, and other consumer goods are saturated with figurative and caricature art to represent Blackness. FOLKUS was born out of a need to “diversify’ the Black aesthetic in design and to offer rich lines – storylines for each product.

Travel Noire: What does the name FOLKUS mean?

Tamecca S.: The name FOLKUS is an acknowledgment of how Black people refer to themselves as FOLKS and a greater extent, as one large international family, the “US” factor.  Moreover, the name connotes the brand’s mission to possess a focus on the development of products that celebrate the cultural currency of Blackness

Travel Noire: Will your product be available all year round? or just during the holidays?

Tamecca S.: FOLKUS products are available year-round, and our designs are seasonless. Black joy and celebration should always be “in season.”

Travel Noire: Is there anything else you want our readers to know that I didn’t ask that you feel is important?

Tamecca S.: What differentiates FOLKUS. FOLKUS is relevant to the past, present, and future of the Black experience and aesthetic, making the brand persistent across cultures, time, and place.

FOLKUS designs are “extra” — extraordinary – our patterns, color selection, finishes, and materials are captivating and complex.  In the gift wrap category, FOLKUS leads with intention and innovation. FOLKUS utilizes stone paper instead of wood-pulp paper when possible, our designs are seasonless, and double-sided pairing is standard on all paper.
