Those looking to score bargain travel deals on Black Friday may want to wait a few days to get cheap airfare and hotel rates.

According to leaders in the travel industry, this year will see an increase in deals for airfare, travel tours and more as companies try to get in on the online buying frenzy the Monday and Tuesday following Thanksgiving.

According to Patrick Surry of Hopper.com, a mobile app that notifies users of the best time to buy a flight, there is often a spike in airline fare sales the day after Cyber Monday. “We collect 10 to 15 billion airfare price quotes every day (300 billion a month) and have built a huge historical archive of several trillion prices from over the past several years,” reads a statement on Hopper’s website, which features a graph showing the best days to purchase a flight in the weeks following Thanksgiving. “We analyzed our historical flight pricing data and found that fare sale activity significantly spikes on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.”

Cyber Monday is still a big draw for travelers booking hotels according to Hotel Engine, which states that 27% more people book flights on Cyber Monday than any other day. Cyber Monday and Travel Deal Tuesday are also a great time to book car rentals, with companies like Hertz expected to host flash sales.

So what’s the best way to take advantage of travel deals? Start by signing up for newsletters from travel deal sites like Expedia, Priceline and Airfarewatchdog ahead of time, and sign up to receive alerts from companies directly if you have a preference for specific airlines and hotels. Fare sales are often for travel during the off-peak season and usually have restrictions like blackout dates and are nonrefundable, so be sure to read the rules before making a purchase.
