2019 is pushing right along and before you know it, we’ll be celebrating a new year. Now that we’re halfway through, it’s a great time to assess those travel goals you made at the beginning of the year.

Black travelers spent more than $63 billion in tourism last year, and analysts are anticipating an increase in 2019.

As you make travel plans for the rest of the year, make sure you travel to these top destinations for black travelers:

Ghana

There has never been a better time for black travelers to visit Ghana.

It’s been 400 years since the Transatlantic Slave Trade where tens of millions of people were taken from their homes in West Africa before arriving in the Americas.

Ghanaian officials are opening their arms to African Americans and others descendants in other countries whose ancestors were victimized by the brutality of slavery to participate in the “Year of the Return.”

Ghana is hosting cultural activities all year-long for people to connect with their ancestral roots.

Senegal

When you’re done visiting Ghana, your next stop should be Senegal.

Also located on the coast of West Africa, Senegal is known for its stunning beaches and welcoming culture.

Senegal’s capital city, Dakar, is a vibrant destination that attracts visitors from all over the world for the Dakar Biennale Art Festival, a contemporary art exhibition that takes place every two years.

At the top of your itinerary should be a visit to the Island of Gorée. Located, just off the coast of Dakar,  the island served as the largest slave-trading center. The site has a painful past but is a great place to honor those who were enslaved.

Montreal, Canada

There’s so much to love about Toronto, especially with its thriving Caribbean culture but Ontario’s capital can get quite busy.

That’s why you should head to Montreal instead.

Montreal is a foodie city and has the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada, according to Geos Montreal.

With its strong African and Caribbean culture, there’s no doubt that you will find diversity on the culinary scene.

Bermuda

Remember when we told you how Bermuda tourism officials are working to double the amount of African American tourists by 2025? Well now is a great time to visit.

From the people, beaches, and culture, Bermuda is the perfect Caribbean island for those of you looking for a quick get-away.
