Belize has moved up the rankings in recent years as a hot spot in the Caribbean.  According to Caribbean Journal, this island has set a new record for themselves for tourism arrivals. For the first time last year, Belize reached the milestone of having half-a-million stay over visitor arrivals.

The Belize Tourism Board shares that they have increased tourism by 2.8 percent from 2018 and had 503,177 overnight travelers.

Manuel Heredia Jr, Belize Tourism Minister, tells Caribbean Journal: “This is a significant accomplishment which is testament to the fact that Belize’s tourism industry continues on an upward trend.”

Heredia goes on to say, “We now look forward to building on this achievement in 2020, as we continue to work with our valued industry partners and stakeholders, to further develop and enhance Belize’s tourism product.”

The island’s tourism officials set a goal to have 556,000 annual visitors by the year 2030 and it’s looking more attainable than ever before.

Heredia also shares that in 2010, Belize only had 241,119 overnight travelers, meaning they have grown by 100 percent in the past decade.

“Belize has long been one of the best-kept secrets in the Caribbean. With a vast array of underwater life, tropical landscape, natural world wonders like the Great Blue Hold, Mayan ruins and more, it is a diverse destination for visitors,” says David Benzaquen, general manager of the private-island resort Cayo Espanto

“Having opened the doors to Cayo Espanto more than 20 years ago, we have been able to experience the immense amount of growth and recognition the country has gained and are thrilled to be a part of the thriving destination,” says Benzaquen to Caribbean Journal

With the growth of tourism comes growth in infrastructure. Belize is planning on building a new Four Seasons Resort on Caye Chapel, Margaritaville and Marriott’s Autograph Collection.

You can expect more boutique hotels and resorts to pop up on the island as the growth in tourism rises.
