First off, let us all say it together, eww!

While you never know what you will encounter while traveling, we can all agree that bed bugs are the last thing we want.

According to the Center for Disease Control, the tiny insects can literally be found in any destination, and the cleanliness of a place does not have any effect on them showing up.

Here are a few tips that we found that can help you deal with these pesky insects.

1. Always inspect your accommodation thoroughly

While the name would suggest that they are only found in beds, they can actually be in almost any furniture near a bed as well. When you first get to your accommodation it is best to inspect for them before getting settled in.

Adult bedbugs are about the size of an apple seed and are reddish-brown in color. Baby bugs are very tiny and not as easy to spot. You should check around the edges and seams of your mattress as well as the box spring. Additionally, do a check around any furniture close to the bed, any cracks in the nightstand, as well as behind picture frames.

2. Report any suspicions ASAP

Of course, your hotel or accommodation will not want to face the fact that there are bedbugs. Not only will this affect you, but it will affect nearly all guests staying there too.

If you do in fact have bedbugs, you will need to pack up your belongings as soon as you can and ask to be moved to another room– preferably one not near the affected room.

“If you think your hotel bed has bedbugs, you can either check your bed yourself, looking for small blood spots or small blood smears on the sheets and strip the bed and check under the mattress seams or ask the manager to organize for the housekeeper to do it for you,” Maureen Spencer, travel blogger, told USA TODAY. “Take photos of any evidence you find and ask for a room change.”

3. Sterilize your belongings

Once you are moved, it is best to clean all of your belongings that were in the room too. If you have access to a washer, it is best to run your clothes through a cycle on hot immediately.

If you don’t have access to a washer, you can store all of your things into large garbage bags and place them in a freezer overnight.

As far as actual bites, the bugs do not carry disease. But, some people can be allergic to the bites. If so, you should be seen by a doctor as soon as you can to treat it.
