At least 10 people were injured following a shooting incident in New Orleans’ French Quarter.

Ten victims were transported to a local hospital. Police confirmed that two of the victims are in critical condition adding that the critical patients “suffered gunshots to the torso.”

No fatalities were reported.

An NOPD spokesperson said that one suspect is in custody but believes more people were involved.

“An individual was detained near the scene,” police say, but his or her possible involvement in the shooting is under investigation.

Police received a call around 3:20 a.m. local time from someone reporting a disturbance. When officers arrived, local media reported they could hear gunshots and found victims immediately.

“Unfortunately, there were so many people out here we were unable to determine who was actually firing shots at the time,” NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said.  “We do not know how it started.”

Ferguson added, “we had officers right there within that very block that actually thought that they were being fired upon and took a position to respond to this.”

The incident comes amid a festive holiday weekend in the French Quarter.

Thousands of fans and alumni are celebrating in the city for the Bayou Classic football game that has been traditionally been played on Thanksgiving weekend between Southern University and Grambling State University.

No charges have been filed at this time.
