Americans Would Rather Travel Than Be With Family For Thanksgiving, Study Finds
A new study found that more Americans are choosing to take a Thanksgiving getaway rather than traveling back home.
According to Hostelworld, an online hostel-booking platform, travelers from the US booked 36% more stays during the Thanksgiving weekend last year compared to any other weekend in November.
Rather than going home for Thanksgiving dinner, Hostelworld’s data revealed that travelers booked trips to Amsterdam, London and Paris, the three most popular cities for bookings over Thanksgiving weekend.
Based on Skyscanner data, an average domestic flight home during Thanksgiving is $528, which is approximately $100 more than the same flight would be any other time of year.
“It seems Americans are redirecting those funds to international trips to explore the world,” Breffin Horgan, chief product officer at Hostelworld, said. “Travelers won’t miss the family pull out couch when they are living it up in the Montmartre in Paris at Le Regent, having afternoon tea in London at the Park Villa, or biking around the beautiful canals of Amsterdam and staying at Cocomama.”
