Arriving at the airport can be a nerve-racking experience, especially when checking in luggage. Will my luggage make it to the destination? Will the airline know to transfer my bags to my connecting flight?

We’ve all been there. However, the chances of your suitcase being either lost or damaged only have a 0.4% chance of happening according to LuggageHero‘s 2020. The brand analyzed data on mishandled baggage in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Air Travel Consumer Reports.

In theory, 0.4% sounds low. Based on this percentage, only 853,821 out of 203,234,335 bags that were checked-in were either damaged or lost.

Allegiant Air came in 1st, for the second year in a row, as the best to handle your bags. Southwest and Hawaiian Airlines came in at number 2 and 3.

American Airlines had the worst record, beating the 2019’s winner Envoy Air, which came in 2nd this year. American and Envoy mishandled checked luggage at rates of over 0.58%.

Fun fact. Did you know the time of year may also determine the safety of your luggage? The reports show January 2020, as the worst month with over 200,000 mishandled bags with more than 40,000 of those cases coming from American Airlines. September had the least amount of mishandling for the year.
