Airplane Makers Thinking Ahead With In-flight Yoga And Bigger Seats
It’s 2019 and airplane makers are constantly researching how to make planes more comfortable in the years to come.
Airlines, such as Qantas, are busy planning and testing routes that may possibly have passengers confined to a plane for up to 22 hours. With these long-hauls coming, passengers can’t help but wonder how plane engineers will keep them comfortable for these long distances.
Companies like Boeing and Airbus have been in the lab thinking of some pretty cool things. Of course, the most important change will be adding larger seats back onto planes. Over the years, seats and legroom have decreased in size to accommodate more passengers. However, it seems that companies are looking to move away from that in the future.
Currently, the average seat measures about 17 inches across. Research from the London Sleep Centre shows that increasing the seat width to 18 inches, improves passenger sleep quality by 53 percent. So airlines are looking at ways to do so.
Smaller changes like adding more hydrating foods and foods low in salt to airplane menus are being tested too. It’s a known fact that flying can dehydrate the body due to the thin, dry air. Airlines want to fix that with little food swaps like using mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes and adding foods with high water content like cucumbers, celery, and strawberries.
The most over the top plans involve what airlines can do with unused space in planes’ cargo compartments.
On the Airbus A330 aircraft, the unused space is about 111 square feet, or around the size of a New York living room. The company has all sorts of remodeling ideas. They have toyed with the idea of adding playrooms, yoga or cycling spaces, and even tricked out lounges.
With changes like these, flying long distances will be a lot easier. Can you imagine going through a series of sun salutations on a plane? It sounds really dope. Welcome to the future!
