Congratulations to South Africa’s Sho Madjozi and Nigeria’s Burna Boy on taking home awards for Best New International Act (Viewer’s Choice) and Best International Act at the 2019 BET Awards in Los Angeles, California on Sunday.

These awards are reflective of the cultural worldwide impact of Afrobeats music when fused with other genres. It was an amazing night of exceptional performances, powerful singing, and artists finally getting their just due.

South African pop star Sho Madjozi could not contain her excitement as she jumped around on stage after host Terrence J announced her win. Tears flowed from her eyes as she became the first South African female artist to win a BET Award. She joins previous South African winners, Sjava and DJ Black Coffee.

Sho Madjozi is still riding the wave of success from her debut album Limpopo Champions League, dedicated to her village in South Africa.

“My story is a testament that you can come from any village, in any forgotten part of the world and you can still be a superstar,” she said during her acceptance speech. “For the girls from come from where I’m from Limpopo, you don’t have to change who you are.”

Earlier this year, we predicted Nigeria’s Burna Boy as an artist to watch — and for good reason. His debut album Outside hit the number 3 spot for Reggae Albums on Billboard.

Last night, everyone in the room felt a sense of black pride when Burna Boy’s mother, Mama Burna, delivered his acceptance speech.

“The message from Burna I believe would be that every Black person should please remember that you were African before you were anything else,” she said.

The “Ye” rapper issued his own brief acceptance via Instagram story. “Thank you, Africa and everyone, that’s been supporting. I am not crazy on awards but this one means a lot!!” followed by the black fist emoji.
