April can be a hit or miss month when it comes to travel. The month is prime for off-season exploring, which means affordable airfare and hotels and fewer crowds, but the spring month also means that weather in many destinations can be largely unpredictable. Still, April is one of my favorite months to travel, especially internationally, because it lights up the wanderlust and gets me seeing the world before the frenzied travel season begins in June.

If you’re thinking about taking a last-minute getaway in April without having to blow through your savings, these are the three destinations you should consider visiting.

Managua, Nicaragua

If you go anywhere this April, make it Managua. Round-trip flight’s to Nicaragua’s capital are around $400 from many major cities in the US and hotels, even the best ones, are rarely more than $200 per night. Go bird watching at Chocoyero-El Brujo Natural Reserve, experience traditional fritanga at Asados de Doña Tania and drive to the crater of an active volcano at Parque Nacional Volcán Masaya …if you dare.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur will be two things in April…warm and rainy. But with flights available for around $600 from some cities and 5-star hotels going for as little as $80 a night, April is a great time to try Malaysian food firsthand, tour the Batu caves and take in the beauty of the natural surroundings and peaceful temples.

Cusco, Peru

Keep an eye out for affordable flights to Cusco in April and you can be pushing your limits during a hike along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, marveling at the architecture of Plaza de Armas and shopping for produce at San Pedro Cusco Market in no time. Hotels and food are also reasonable all around Cusco, which will make your wallet happy.
