A state gas tax hike went into effect on Monday in California with a gas price increase of 5.6 cents per gallon.

The national average of gas as of late June was $2.71 with California being far above that average, having gas prices of $3.75 per gallon.

In addition to the sky-high gas prices, Californians traveling during the July 4th holiday have another thing to worry about, which is traffic.

According to AAA, the worst time to travel in Los Angeles the week of July 4th is on Wednesday between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Delays are estimated to be three times more hectic than usual.

The overall travel volume for Americans during this year’s 4th of July weekend is expected to rise by 4.1% from last year.

Paula Twidale, vice president of AAA Travel says, “as Independence Day approaches, it’s time for the much loved family road trip and this year will be one for the record books, with more Americans than ever planning vacations. This holiday builds on the strong travel demand seen for Memorial Day, and with schools now out of session across the country, families coast to coast are eager to travel.”

Transportation analyst at INRIX (traffic analytic company), Trevor Reed says, “with record-level travelers hitting the road this holiday, drivers must be prepared for delays around our major metros. Although travel times are expected to nominally increase throughout the week, hands down, Wednesday afternoon will be the worst time to be on the road.”
