Once again, Mother Nature is getting in the way of travel plans with a perfectly timed winter storm.

Yes, we are being totally sarcastic, but you have to admit, storms always seem to happen when we have places to go and people to see. A winter storm is set to make an appearance during the holidays and will bring heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms along for the ride. With the storm set to make landfall in the Carolinas and head all the way up, get ready for some extra stress.

Some of the biggest airports on the east coast will be affected. So if you are traveling out of Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta, Tampa International, Orlando, Miami, New York’s JFK & LaGuardia, Newark Liberty, Philadelphia, and Washington Dulles, you may want to check the status of your flight. 72 flights have already been canceled, and a projected 941 delays out the U.S. are on the way. Boston Logan hasn’t been hit just yet, but reports say travelers should be on the lookout.

Most airlines will help passengers out when their flights are canceled, but not this time. Since there aren’t any forecasts for snow, most travelers will be on their own. Airlines are keeping eyes on the weather to see what happens, but as of right now, there haven’t been any waivers issued. Travelers should check their airline’s website just to make sure. We know you may be panicking already, but experts have got your back with a few tips.

When the weather tries to put a damper on your plans, make sure to check for travel waivers ahead of time, use international numbers, and always plan for a “recovery budget” because airlines don’t have to give you your money back for canceled flights. If you want to kill some time while you’re at the airport and don’t feel like reading, listen to travel podcasts like The Travel (Guy)des.
