9 Travel Hacks For Overcoming Jetlag

Traveling to a far, unforeseen land is pretty exciting. You touch down that first day, explore, eat good food and BOOM! — jetlag hits you like a ton of bricks.

What exactly is jetlag, you ask?

According to Dictionary.com, jetlag is defined as extreme tiredness and other physical effects felt by a person after a long flight across different time zones.

In the summer of 2017, I went on a 10-day trip to Morocco. The entire trip I was running around the different Moroccan cities exploring and living my best life. When I got home though? I was stuck in my bed and my body would not allow me to leave the house.

I felt the effects of jetlag up to two weeks after arriving back to my home in Brooklyn.

This was before I knew of remedies to combat jetlag, which by the way, helps me a great deal now.

Here are tried-and-true remedies to combat jetlag:

Fast Before Flying

Ok, hear me out: this remedy really works.

For 15 hours before your flight is scheduled to land, only drink water or herbal tea (this means absolutely no coffee or alcohol). Once your plane lands and you’re in a new time zone, eat a big breakfast (preferably in the morning).

This works because fasting helps reset your biological clock and assists in avoiding jetlag overall.


This remedy is quite relaxing and can even put you in a meditative state of mind.

The philosophy behind earthing is that by standing barefoot on land, your physical and mental health will be improved.

Just spend about 20-30 minutes standing or walking barefoot on grass, sand — basically, earth. It is said that by doing this, you’re resetting your body which results in a reduction in stress and inflammation.

So get outside, get fresh air and start earthing to avoid jetlag!


There are many aromatherapy oils you can use when traveling to curb jetlag. Choosing an oil with rosemary and lemongrass helps to improve your body’s circulation. Ginger helps your digestive system and aids in muscular fatigue.

Overall, aromatherapy will help to reduce exhaustion, keep your gut healthy and regulate your blood circulation.

All you have to do is apply the aromatherapy oil to your wrist and the nape of your neck every three hours.


If fasting isn’t your thing, make sure to drink plenty of water. Coffee has a reputation for providing an energy boost but it also is extremely dehydrating while you’re in transit.

Water will keep you hydrated and help to prevent the feeling of extreme fatigue that comes with being jetlagged.

Other Ways To Combat Jetlag:

  • Don’t nap for more than 20 minutes during the day
  • Take a shower shortly after arriving
  • Rest during the flight
  • Try to book flights that arrive early in the morning
  • Keep moving and stay active
