If you are looking for a Greek island getaway that is not as touristy as Mykonos and Santorini, here are five Greek island alternatives that bring all the beauty and culture that Greece has to offer, minus the overwhelming crowds.


Syros is an island full of color located in the Aegean Sea. Seaside villages like Kini offer low-key getaways on beautiful beaches without the lines of beach chairs and umbrellas. The capital of Syros island, Ermoupoli, is considered one of the most picturesque capitals in the area and is ideal for those looking for a relaxing retreat.

A lesser-known foodie destination, Sifnos is located in the Cyclades island group and is

home to the first cookbook written in 1910 as well as some of the best authentic Greek food in the country. You can expect to indulge in traditional dishes like mastello, revitháda, and decadent desserts.


Folegandros is an untouched piece of true Greece with a relaxing atmosphere, hospitality, beautiful beaches, and is conveniently located close to Santorini and Milos. There are three villages on the island that are home to only around 300 residents during the winter months, making it one of the smallest islands on the list.  


Just a one hour flight from Athens, Astypalea is a charming Greek island with only around 1,300 residents. With quant fishing villages and quiet beaches, the locals here know the art of slower living. Head to this island if you are looking to get away from your daily hustle.

Symi is a national monument that is best explored by foot. The island is best known for its beaches, yachts, Cyprus lined hillsides, and annual music festival. When entering its port, you are instantly overtaken by the picture-perfect beauty of the seaside village. A visit here means living amongst the locals with very few tourists to get in the way of your authentic Greek vacation.
