As the Coronavirus pandemic continues to grow, nations are working around the clock to implement ways to contain its spread. Last night, President Trump was the latest leader to speak on plans to cut down on the virus’ spread.

In a press conference, Trump announced a 30-day travel ban of foreign nationals traveling from Europe to the United States. The ban, which goes into effect at midnight on Friday. excludes American citizens, permanent legal residents and their families, as well as those traveling from Britain.

Many were unsure as to why those from the U.K. were excluded, but foreigners who in the previous two weeks have been in the 26 countries that make up the European Union’s Schengen Area are all grouped into the ban.

Trump’s announcement was not welcomed with open arms by European leaders.

“The coronavirus is a global crisis, not limited to any continent and it requires cooperation rather than unilateral action,” The European Commission, the governing body of the European Union said. “The European Union disapproves of the fact that the U.S. decision to impose a travel ban was taken unilaterally and without consultation.”

While American travelers are still able to leave Europe to travel back to the U.S. the ban does subject them to being sent to certain airports for more enhanced screenings. This ban could also bring an increase in flight cancellations as well as delays, which would affect the entire travel industry as a whole.

The U.S. State Department also issued a new travel advisory urging Americans to “reconsider travel” to all countries because of the global effects of the coronavirus.
