The World's Busiest Airport Happens To Be In The United States, Take A Guess!
For the 21st time in a row, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has been rated the busiest passenger airport in the world. Last year alone Hartsfield-Jackson had over 107 million passengers flying through the A-town airport.
According to the Airports Council International’s world traffic report, released on September 16, there was a 3.3% increase in passenger traffic in Atlanta this year.
The ACI World Director General Angela Gittens stated in a news release, “The World Airport Traffic Report shows that even as smaller airports around the world continue to make strong gains, the largest hub airports continue to grow. There were 16 airports handing more than 40 million passengers per annum in 2008 and there are now 54.”
According to CNN, Hartsfield is within a two-hour flight of 80% of the United States population of more than 300 people. It is also a connecting hub and means of entry into the U.S.
For these reasons, Atlanta is dominating the passenger market.
Since 2017, there has been no change in the rankings of the top three passenger airports globally.
Beijing Capital International Airport comes in second place, having almost 101 million passengers through its airport last year and increasing growth by 5.4%.
Dubai Airport lands the 3rd place spot, handling 89 million passengers and growing by 1% since last year. Dubai also ranked amongst London’s Heathrow and Hong Kong International Airport for most international passenger traffic.
When it comes to most aircraft movements (takeoffs and landings), Chicago O’Hare International Airport takes the number 1 spot. In 2018, O’Hare had almost 904,000 movements while Atlanta had 895,000.
