Travel itself has become very trendy amongst millennials. Many of us have been bit by the travel bug and we succumb to our wanderlust with no regrets.
2019 has been an exciting year for travel — Pepijn Rijvers, Chief Marketing Officer at Booking.com states: “With technological advancements, an ever more connected world and a continuously growing consumer appetite for the best travel experiences, we’re poised for groundbreaking developments, taking travel to unexplored heights.”
With that said, here are the 2019 travel trends you need to get hip to:
Over half of travelers that talked to Booking.com said they decide on destinations based on the social issues in that place. Things like human rights, equality, improved working conditions, and environmental issues all have an influence on travelers decisions. This influence is so strong that over half of those travelers told Booking.com they will not choose a destination if their traveling to that location will have a negative impact on the locals.
Safety is also a top priority for many travelers regardless of gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation. For example, Destination Pride is a platform that shares ranking for how LGBTQ friendly certain destinations are.
Digital Tour Guides
Everyone is on a quest for a picture-perfect vacation that is sure to induce FOMO. Many travelers now want someone to do all the planning of their vacations for them as well as making travel recommendations in the form of a digital tour guide. Over 41 percent of travelers who spoke with Booking.com say they want travel brands to use technology such as AI to suggest travel plans.
Many travelers value learning new things while abroad. 2019 is the rise of travelers who want to learn something new through volunteering while on vacation.
Generation Z, according to ELLE, is starting to ditch expensive college degrees in exchange for life skills and knowledge that can be acquired through traveling.
68 percent of travelers that spoke with Booking.com say they are considering traveling for cultural exchanges which will result in learning a new skill.
Reducing Use Of Plastic
Both millennial and Generation Z travelers are looking for sustainable ways to enjoy new destinations. Accommodation providers are also making an effort to reduce their use of plastic. It is predicted that sustainable start-ups will start popping up as well as enterprising launching more eco-friendly futures.
Have you ever wanted to just get away from your everyday life for just a few days? Many travelers have started to take micro-trips which are short getaways to nearby places. “Bite-sized travel”, as ELLE puts it, allows for curated travel itineraries packed into a few days.
According to ELLE, “improvements in flight routes, transport, cheap flights, on-demand car rentals, and accommodations” have made micro-trips more popular.
Off The Beaten Path
Travelers are craving unique experiences in places most have never gone. This has turned into a quest for hidden gems around the world — places you won’t normally see while scrolling down your social media timeline.
For example, NASA is currently working on it’s Lunar Space Station which is set to launch in 2022. 38 percent of travelers told Booking.com they would love to travel into space in the near future.
Highly Curated Experiences
Millennials and Generation Z-ers have become the epitome of living curated lives. This also translates in the way we now travel. Most travelers have said they enjoy experiences more than material items. Travel has turned into visiting places that will evoke comfort and happiness rather than materialistic experiences.
