United Airlines has significantly enhanced its flying experience for its passengers, particularly those in economy class. The airline has reached an agreement with Panasonic Avionics to install nearly 300,000 units of the company’s Astrova in-flight entertainment screens on select new Boeing 787 and Airbus A321XLR aircraft. While this development may not provide wider seats or increased legroom, it promises to provide travelers with larger and sharper displays and the integration of Bluetooth technology.

Panasonic Avionics’ Astrova IFE screens are seatback displays utilizing 4K OLED technology, offering superior image quality and a more impressive contrast ratio than many other IFE systems. Astrova incorporates the latest Bluetooth technology, enabling high-fidelity 3D spatial audio. This advancement eliminates the need for wired headphones or Bluetooth dongles, allowing passengers to connect their wireless earbuds seamlessly. Furthermore, Astrova boasts USB-C ports capable of providing 100 watts of DC power, facilitating the convenient charging of smartphones and tablets during the flight.

While the Boeing 787 and Airbus A321XLR aircraft primarily belong to United’s international fleet, reports suggest that the airline also intends to equip its domestic planes with Astrova IFE systems. This implementation is part of United’s ambitious United Next program, which aims to equip every seat with a seatback in-flight display. First-class passengers can look forward to accessing 13-inch displays, while those in economy class will benefit from 10-inch IFE screens.

The collaboration between United Airlines and Panasonic Avionics will also allow for future upgrades to the Astrova displays. The IFE system employs a modular architecture with a removable peripheral bar, facilitating the addition of newer technologies and updates to Bluetooth connectivity or charging stations. However, installing these cutting-edge in-flight entertainment systems is not expected to commence until 2025, providing ample time for United to prepare for this significant enhancement to the passenger experience.
