Sandia Mountains

When I stepped off of the plane in Albuquerque, it was my second time visiting the Southwestern city. I just knew I had to return after a work trip took me there a year earlier and opened my eyes to the beauty of this region of the US. I arrived at night, when the city fools you into thinking it’s like any other place. However, when the sun rises behind the Sandia Mountains, (which you can see from every part of the city), you know you are in a very special place.

I decided to stay at a bed and breakfast that came highly recommended on TripAdvisor called Los Poblanos Inn. I had my own little cabin on the farm with a fireplace, mini kitchen and lavender handmade soaps. The morning breakfast was a short walk across the grounds where they served fresh food grown and raised on the farm. They also have bikes, amazing customer service and most importantly, the perfect atmosphere for a peaceful getaway. If you’re looking for more rest and relaxation, check out Albuquerque Baths where you can use the pools, jacuzzis and get a massage.

If you’re a knick knack and jewelry collector like me, you should visit the Old Town Square where Native American merchants come to sell handmade jewelry and souvenirs. I scored a gorgeous swarovski crystal necklace, bangles and some spices. Everything in this area is within walking distance, so it was easy to stroll around and explore.  Sticking with the wild west theme, the High Noon Restaurant is delicious and serves up creative dishes like blue corn enchiladas and green chile burgers. Seasons is a modern, upscale option in Old Town specializes in classic American fare and inventive drinks.

Although I live amongst a plethora of boutiques and specialty stores in New York City, I love shopping in small towns and cities even more. Something about the experience makes me feel like what I purchase might be extra unique. Nob Hill is located right along Route 66 which runs through the city of Albuquerque. It’s here where you will find great shopping, a plethora of restaurants and the upbeat part of the city.

If you like a little adventure, the Sandia Peak Tramway will take you to the top of the mountains where you will have a view of the entire city. Albuquerque is also home to the Hot Air Balloon Festival and rides are available through many companies year-round. To satisfy your Breaking Bad fix, you can schedule a tour via bike, trolley or even an ATV. You might also enjoy a visit to the candy lady who makes the fake goods for the show at a shop in Old Town. Many of the sites from the show are easily accessible so you can also create your own tour around the city.

Albuquerque has something for everyone so book a ticket and prepare for an amazing trip!
