While on a solo vacation in Cozumel, Mexico, a Black Tiktok user got to experience the shared love and support between Black women firsthand.

The now-viral video, which has reached nearly 200,000 views and garnered more than 60,000 likes, belongs to Gabby, or @blackgirlblueworld, a diver and content creator, who is best known for her heartfelt videos about travel and scuba diving.

Based on her previous videos, Gabby typically travels the world solo chasing new places to dive. Among them are areas in Cozumel, Tulum, parts of Belize, and Catalina Island. Gabby also takes groups on beginner diver tours.

In a TikTok video, Gabby said two Black women noticed her filming a scuba-diving-focused vlog and came up to her.

The three of them chatted briefly over their shared excitement of being in Cozumel, and that’s when the magic happened.

The two older women, Sheila and Teala, inquired about what Gabby was doing in Mexico. They specifically asked about whether she was a scuba diver and if she was traveling by herself. Gabby said “yes” to both, prompting one of the women to say, “And that’s how you do it.”

In the video, Gabby says she and the two women “noticed each other’s light.”

Cheering Her On

Sheila and Teala began to sing, crafting an on-the-spot theme song for the scuba diver, with lyrics “I’m a Black girl, in a blue world…Here I am.” The song’s impromptu lyrics nod to the diver’s social handle @BlackGirlBlueWorld. After more singing, the two began to express their pride in the younger woman.

“Go ‘head girl,” one said. “I’m proud of you.”

It’s unclear whether Sheila or Teala, or both, was speaking at the time, but their expression of joy in Gabby’s adventures in solo travels is clear. Off-screen, the women continued to share affirming words with Gabby, prompting head nods and a repeated “thank you’ from the diver.

“It’s little moments like this…we don’t see stuff like this…until you’re experiencing it,” Gabby said. The other women agreed that their chance meeting was predestined.

By the video’s end, the diver, smiling, repeatedly proclaimed her love for Black women.

She captioned the video by saluting Black women and how they “see each other even when no one else is looking.”

Reactions To The Video

Several internet users have shared Gabby’s sentiments of loving the connection between Black women. One user wrote “Seeing the older generation give the younger generation their flowers is powerful.”

Comments like “the way my soul cried” and “nobody can light you up like a Black woman celebrating your shine” in reaction to the video. The messages of encouragement reaffirmed the power and beauty in community and in Black women.
